UAV Scholarship Operating Procedures

A new scholarship application form was uploaded on 30 August 2021.  You do not need to complete a new form if you have already completed your application using the old form.  The new form adds questions to allow graduate students to apply.

The Ukrainian American Veterans (UAV) scholarship operating procedures include both student application procedures and scholarship committee procedures.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Ukrainian American Veterans (UAV) Scholarship Fund is to award scholarship money to deserving full-time undergraduate college student and to part/full-time graduate college students to help pay for tuition, books or school supplies.

Eligibility

Undergraduate and graduate college students who are descendants or relatives of Ukrainian American Veteran members, including Members-at-Large (MAL), are eligible to apply. Students from accredited trade schools or institutions (mechanical or culinary arts school) are also eligible to apply.

Undergraduate applicants must be full-time matriculated students in a degree program. Graduate students do not need to attend full-time. High school students may apply in their senior year of high school. College attendance will be verified in the fall semester prior to awarding any funds.

Student must show that you are a descendant or relative of a current or former UAV member.

Undergraduate students may apply up to four times during their undergraduate college career; graduate students may apply two times.

Application Deadline

The deadline to submit an application is 31 August of each year.

Student Application Procedures

  1. Download an application from the UAV website and complete the application form
  2. Write an article (400-500 words) on one of the topics listed on the application form
  3. Provide a high-quality digital photo of yourself; digital photo should be sent to the email address listed on the application form
  4. Sign and date the application form
  5. Submit application, essay and photo prior to the annual deadline; a paper copy of the application and essay should be mailed to the address on the application form

Scholarship Committee Duties

The Scholarship Committee consists of a National Scholarship Officer and up to four additional committee members. Duties include

  1. Maintain scholarship funds in certificates of deposit (CD), savings and/or checking accounts
  2. Prepare mailings that are sent to all UAV members each year
  3. Read applications and essays and then select scholarship recipients who will receive monetary awards
  4. Determine the amount of each award

Scholarship Committee Procedures

These are the main criteria to consider when deciding how much to award scholarship recipients.

  1. Read and evaluate essays
  2. Consider extracurricular activities such as sports participation, community service and participation in Ukrainian organizations
  3. Give at least one award for $500, if possible
  4. Prior to awarding a scholarship, verify student attendance for the fall semester; check transcript; speak to parents at home address to verify attendance; confirm veteran connection
  5. Send congratulatory letter and check after the UAV National Convention in the fall
  6. Write an article about the scholarship recipients and send pictures to The Ukrainian Weekly, UAV Tribune and UAV Webmaster for publication
  7. Identify and contact potential donors for the UAV scholarship fund
  8. Those who contribute $250 or more may have an award given or mentioned in their name
  9. Awards may be designated for recipients from a specific city, state or other geographic area
  10. Solicit UAV members for donations to the UAV scholarship fund
  11. Prepare quarterly reports for the UAV National Executive Board meetings
  12. Prepare annual report at the UAV National Convention
  13. Send receipts to donors of the scholarship fund

After weighing the listed criteria and any other influencing factor(s), the scholarship committee will make the final decision about awards.
